One of the most controversial claims in recent times is that eating organic food reduces chances of getting cancer. It’s true.  Eating well is better for you. The chances of living a longer healthier life will surely increase if you eat a good organic diet verses fried foods and pizza.

But reducing chances of getting cancer?

First, let’s talk about the relationship between food and cancer. What are the biggest culprits that we should be on the lookout for?

Synthetic Pesticides And You

As we all know produce is grown on farms. Pesticides are used to grow crops. Farmers need them, otherwise crops would be devoured by a variety of pests. However the problem is today, many commercial growers use synthetic pesticides.

Right now, over 70% of commercially grown products are sprayed with synthetic pesticides. Made with a compound of chemicals, these pesticides are detrimental to your health and the environment.

While these chemicals are sprayed on land during farming, they can make their way into water sources. Once pesticides make their way into streams, rivers or the ocean, animals can get sick and die.

But the harm doesn’t stop there. They also get into ground water. The process is called leeching. Lots of people depend on groundwater for drinking and cooking. But if pesticides contaminates a water source, it becomes harmful and unsanitary.

Once pesticides enter the body they are stored in the colon. The chemicals remain there over a long period of time slowly poisoning. And pesticides in terms of crops are everywhere.  You can be exposed to multiple synthetic pesticides that have been sprayed on an apple.

Countless studies have linked pesticides with cancer. Other diseases include Alzheimer’s Disease, ADHD and birth defects. Pesticides have shown to damage the nervous system. As well as the the reproductive system. Fact is, synthetic pesticides are deeply problematic. Yet, most of the commercial crops in the U.S., are sprayed with these chemicals.

Organic Foods And Natural Pesticides

Organic crop producers use natural pesticides. These natural compounds don’t damage the environment. Nor do the impact the health of consumers. Nonetheless, twenty-five synthetic pesticides are approved in the U.S., for organic use. These compounds are known as “soft synthetic” pesticides. Chemicals that have not been proven harmful when used on organic crops, so far.

So where does that leave concerned organic food lovers and cancer?

Study Says Organic Diet Reduces Cancer

A French study, published in 2018, found that people who eat an organic diet reduce their cancer risk by 25%. The study, found in the JAMA Internal Medicine Journal, reports that researchers followed almost 70,000 people for over four years.

It revealed that there was an overall reduction in cancer risk for all patients eating an organic diet. There was also a marked reduction in two kinds of cancer.  These were lymphoma and breast cancer for women past menopause.

Getting Back To Pesticides

In both Europe and the U.S, for food to be labeled organic, food cannot be produced using synthetic pesticides. But as we have already stated over twenty-five synthetic pesticides can be used on organic crops.  These pesticides have been rated as harmless.  Still, organic crops are not synthetic pesticide free.

As it stands, around 90% of consumers in America have detectable levels of pesticides in blood and urine. This is according to the Center for Disease Control.

Should We Now Only Eat Organic Food?

The findings from the French study are encouraging. But there’s still much more research to be done. Bottom line: organic food is good for you. As is an overall healthy diet.
