A French study, published in 2018, found that people who eat an organic diet reduce their cancer risk by 25%. The study, found in the JAMA Internal Medicine Journal, reports that researchers followed almost 70,000 people for over four years.
It revealed that there was an overall reduction in cancer risk for all patients eating an organic diet. There was also a marked reduction in two kinds of cancer. These were lymphoma and breast cancer for women past menopause.
Getting Back To Pesticides
In both Europe and the U.S, for food to be labeled organic, food cannot be produced using synthetic pesticides. But as we have already stated over twenty-five synthetic pesticides can be used on organic crops. These pesticides have been rated as harmless. Still, organic crops are not synthetic pesticide free.
As it stands, around 90% of consumers in America have detectable levels of pesticides in blood and urine. This is according to the Center for Disease Control.
Should We Now Only Eat Organic Food?
The findings from the French study are encouraging. But there’s still much more research to be done. Bottom line: organic food is good for you. As is an overall healthy diet. A healthy weight and exercise also contributes to cancer prevention. Eat a diet that’s rich in whole grains. And watch alcohol consumption while avoiding, sugars, refined grains and processed meat.
What all this means is that you should opt for organic food as much as possible. For the simple reason of lower pesticide contamination. Also, there are nutrients found in certain fruits and vegetables that do fight cancer.
