Natural Products Expo West 2018 Biodynamic Coffee
Expo West Natural Products is an annual event, which showcases thousands of natural, organic and healthy products. Natural Products Expo West 2018 took place between March 7-11. It hosted a record-breaking 85.000 people. 3,521 exhibiting companies joined the event, including more than 600 first-time exhibitors.
I felt very lucky to be a first-time attendee at this year`s event. It was thrilling to attend the show for the first time as it certainly exceeded my expectations. The crowds, tremendous variety of products, impressive structure, and the sheer size of Anaheim Convention Center have enchanted me. During my time at the Expo West, I met amazing exhibitors, tasted delicious healthy products that had never heard about, and learned a great deal thanks to conversations I had with the exhibitors.
Deep Valley Coffee
Throughout the Expo West, I was searching for coffee exhibitors that I had not tried before. On Saturday, March 10, on the first level of the North halls, I came across Deep Valley coffee, right next to Jailhouse coffee. They were sharing a booth because these two brands have the same owner, Robert Flam.
For a brief moment, the crowds cleared. There was no one talking to the nice lady behind the booth. When I approached their booth for some information and sample, Marie Ezanno, who is in charge of sales, greeted me with a big smile. She offered me a sample of their brewed light roast coffee, which I took happily. (I never turn down coffee).
Biodynamic Coffee
Right away, she asked me if I know what biodynamic coffee is. I was not exactly sure how it is different than organic farming. So, I asked for a clarification. She delivered.
She explained how biodynamic farming treats the soil as a living organism rather than a factory that gives products continuously. So, biodynamic farming aims to regenerate the soil and does not disrupt the regulating ecosystem.
Marie Ezanno emphasizes the importance of biodynamic coffee in healing the environment through agriculture. “Some people find this hard to believe because agriculture often deteriorates the soil and causes gas emissions.”
Organic vs. Biodynamic
After listening to Marie Ezanno talking about biodynamic coffee with a passion, I had to ask: “What is the difference between organic and biodynamic coffee?”
It turns out both farming practices are very similar. They both do not use chemicals and stay away from non-GMO. She tells me that biodynamic farming takes it even further.
In biodynamic farming, the farm needs to be its own entity. It cannot import anything from outside and only uses its own sources to regenerate. So, the farm as a whole is a self-sufficient body that keeps regenerating itself. Moreover, to solve its problems, it turns to itself and does not seek outside help.
First in the United States
As Marie Ezanno tells me the owner Robert Flam introduced completely biodynamic coffee for the first time in the United States. Robert Flam launched Deep Valley coffee in November 2017. So, they are still new products on the market.
Flam`s farms are located in Comocim Estate, Espirito Santo, Brazil. The company itself has its base in Astoria in New York City as Ms. Marie Ezanno proudly declared. It is also certified Biodynamic by Demeter USA.
After learning so much about biodynamic coffee, I thank Marie Ezanno and go on my way to discover other unique coffee products such as Deep Valley coffee at Expo West Natural Products 2018.
