What makes a candy USDA Organic?

To be USDA Certified Organic, a candy must contain 95% or more organic ingredients.

And for a candy to be organic, it’s all about what’s not inside.

What Must Stay Out

A USDA Organic product must only contain natural ingredients. So, anything artificial is off-limits to organic ingredient producers and candy manufacturers.

• Artificial ingredients, flavors, colors, sweeteners, and preservatives are never organic.
• Also, producers can’t use synthetic chemicals, like pesticides and chemical fertilizers, on organic ingredients.
  • Organic farmers form barriers around their organic crops, to protect the crops from chemicals sprayed by neighboring non-organic farms.
  • After all, if those chemicals hit organic crops, the crops aren’t organic anymore!
• For milk to be organic, the cows producing it must only eat organically grown feed.
  • In addition, farmers must raise the cows on organic land and give them room to roam freely.
  • This includes giving them free access to the outdoors, especially to graze.

Organic Means Not Genetically Modified

Most importantly, genetically modified ingredients are always off-limits in organic food.

As the USDA explains, “this means an organic farmer can’t plant GMO seeds, an organic cow can’t eat GMO alfalfa or corn, and an organic…producer can’t use any GMO ingredients.”

Also, farmers must make sure the foods they produce don’t get contaminated with GMOs.

• Natural barriers around organic farms (sometimes made with non-organic plants) protect organic crops.
  • They help make sure that bees don’t bring in pollen from modified plants.
  • After all, if bees bring modified pollen to an unmodified plant, that plant gets the modified gene and isn’t organic anymore.
  • Barriers also protect against modified pollen that the wind carries.

As for candy producers…

• They must keep organic and non-organic products on separate lines. That way, modified ingredients don’t mix in.

• Sugar (because sugar beets are commonly modified)
